The medieval rival of Florence, Siena is a sight not to be missed when you travel to Italy. The picturesque il Campo, the fan-like main square, is the home of the most famous Palio horse race and is a wonderful spot to sit in a café sipping an aperitivo taking in the history, or just contemplating life.

Siena seems to preserve its character more than other Italian cities and is placed in the centre of Chianti country. It has been the star of many films, photographs and advertising campaigns and although Florence has most of the wonderful and treasured art of Italy…Siena has an almost medieval atmosphere. Its towers, walls, magnificent gates, quaint piazzas and narrow streets, which are car free, make it a gem to explore and a photographer’s dream. The Sienese take their history seriously though and each neighbourhood has its own colourful costumes, which are paraded in the regular festivals. The competition is fierce when contesting the most famous Palio, which takes place twice a year. Some Sienese display their patriotism at its best….and worst in the eagerness to take home the prize – neighbourhood honour is at stake.

In Siena we will take a guided walking tour, climb to the top of the tower (if we are energetic), marvel at the outstanding Duomo, shop to our hearts’ content or just spend time relaxing in the many cafes surrounding the wonderful il Campo.
